Here's a scene inspired by Avatar (2009)
Being a full-time lighting artist is a dream come true but I truly miss the set-dressing part of the Environment creation sometimes. This project was incredibly fun to work on as I got to dust off some of the software and skills that I don't get to use on a daily basis. I created a terrain in Gaea, set-dressed the entire scene from the empty black screen, created a waterfall and tweaked a few meshes in Blender and more.
I wanted to experiment with composition and used the Golden Ratio rule as a starting point, I thought the big tree trunk could be an interesting framing tool to help guiding the viewer's eye. I used the Sunny 16 rule with EV100 for lighting the scene trying to get a more cinematic looking image but without compromising performance. It was also interesting to experiment with cinematic lens flares pack that I got from Fab, though it's definitely not made for real-time rendering as the framerate dropped from 60 to 17). There are no fake lights or Post Effects outside of Unreal except for a subtle Halation effect that I added in DaVinciResolve while rendering the video.
I've learned some new techniques and tools while working on this scene which I think is the best part of taking on this little personal project, but I hope you like it! I'm thinking of exploring a few more lighting scenarios for it so stay tuned:)
Feedback is always appreciated!
